Touristic sites upgrading (EURO 8.4 million)
This component aims to improve touristic centers along the tourism corridor of Southern Albania. Main investments include:
- Restoration of cultural heritage assets
- Improvement of infrastructure (roads, signage)
- Creation of panoramic viewpoints along the itinerary
- Preparation of feasibility studies, touristic sites management plans, detailed designs and supervision of works
During project preparation a call-for-proposals for touristic sites upgrading was launched by the MoUD. All key project stakeholders were eligible to submit proposals. In order to proceed to the selection of touristic sites which could benefit from project support a detailed screening and ranking criteria was developed.
Once proposed touristic sites were screened, a ranking process – was followed. The ranking process was developed as part of the Destination Audit exercise – and was based on six different criteria
(i) tourism attractiveness,
(ii) potential economic impacts,
(iii) willingness to develop,
(iv) contribution to diversified product offer,
(v) safeguards and land issues and
(vi) maintenance and sustainability.
Identification
Based on the screening and ranking a preliminary list of projects were identified and selected 8 touristic sites. Detailed designs are being prepared and will start in the near future.
Investments on improvement of touristic sites will include restoration of cultural heritage sites, improvement of supporting infrastructure for these sites, such as vehicle roads, pedestrian paths, visitor centers, signage, creation of rest of look-out points, etc., along the touristic circuit of Southern Albania.
During project detailed designs, an integrated approach will enable enhancement of visitor experiences, as well as a sustainable management of the sites.
