The Regional and Local Roads Connectivity program funded by the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Albanian government foresees the design and implementation of measures to improve climate sustainability and road safety.

TIRANA-Albania is quite vulnerable to climate change. Natural disasters occurring in recent years such as floods, earthquakes, landslides should be taken seriously into consideration in infrastructure investments, especially those considered hot spots.

Increasing sustainability to climate change in the road network ensures improved transport services. A sustainable and safe road system guarantees vulnerable groups quick access to education, health, housing and other community services. It is estimated that if the road system is not rehabilitated, the costs of transporting people and goods increase by 40%. On the other hand, lack of measures to adapt to climate change often results in increased maintenance costs.

For this reason, the Program of Regional and Local Roads Connecting funded by the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the Albanian government provides design and implementation of measures to improve sustainability to climate change and road safety.

These measures include concrete interventions in side channels, culverts, bridges, escarpments asphalting etc

Regarding road safety, the first component of the program brings innovation to the standards of infrastructure projects implemented so far. These interventions foresee sidewalk and bicycle lanes, vertical signage, tourist signaling etc.

The objectives of the Regional and Local Roads Connectivity Program are to improve access to selected agricultural and tourism centers, and to strengthen their municipalities’ capacity to manage their road assets. In the framework of this program will be reconstructed the roads Fier – Seman, Pogradec – Tushemisht, Qafe Thore – Theth – Nderlysaj, Shengjin – Velipoje dhe Vlore – Orikum .
